In the fifth grade of one of the schools in the city of Severyansk comes a new boy Gesha Cheremysh. Classmates and teachers are delighted, because the new student is the brother of the heroic pilot Clement Cheremysh. Gesha is becoming popular. First-graders and high school students look into the classroom to look at the brother of the hero. For persuasiveness Gesha shows everyone a letter from his brother with the signature “Cl. Cheryomysh ". It seems strange to teachers that the hero pilot gave his brother to an orphanage. Gesha explains that his brother lives in a hostel, but as soon as he settles in, he will immediately take him to his place.
Klimenty Cheryomysh distinguished himself in the Far East. Then he was a test pilot, received the title of Hero of the Soviet Union and became one of the best Soviet pilots. He took on the most difficult and crucial tasks, flew to the most remote areas, set records.
Now Gesha’s classmates remember that they also have older brothers, wonderful people. Gesha rarely receives letters from Moscow from his brother. He reads them secretly, shows them to no one, and collects all articles about the hero pilot from newspapers and magazines.To match his brother, the boy has to study well, not to be naughty and not to participate in the tricks of classmates.
Winter begins in Severyansk early, and with its arrival the skating rink opens. Gesha turns out to be an excellent skater and hockey player. There are two hockey teams in the school, one of which is “girlish”. Gesha is chosen as the captain of the boys, and the head of the class Anya Baratova remains the captain of the girls.
Klimentiy Cheryomysh makes a non-stop flight from Sevastopol to Chukotka, but during the flight, the connection with a brave pilot unexpectedly breaks. Gesha has no face. Students are afraid to look at him, and teachers do not ask in class. And then the news comes that Klimenty Cheryomysh landed safely and set a new record.
The country begins elections to the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. From Severyansky district, Klimenty Cheremysh was nominated. The guys begin to worry that another district will intercept the hero, but the pilot agrees to run in their district. Something strange begins to happen to Gesha. He becomes distracted, avoids comrades. To entertain him, the guys decide to arrange a friendly hockey match.
Two days before the match, news arrives that Klimenty Cheryomysh himself arrives in the city. Gesha is becoming weirder. On the day of arrival of the hero, when the guys with the residents of the city are going to go to the station, he disappears.
At the station, decorated with flags and banners, Anya Baratova makes a solemn speech. Everyone wonders why the pilot does not ask about his brother. In the evening, she receives a note from Gesha asking him to meet.Gesha admits that Klimenty Cheryomysh is just his namesake, and he receives letters from Moscow from his sister Claudia. Admiring the hero, Gesha fantasized that they were brothers. To help Gesha, Anya offers to go to the pilot and tell him everything.
It’s not easy to get to the hero: they constantly call him, come, and Anya during the meeting only manages to invite the pilot to a hockey match.
Now Gesha is in thought: to come to the match - to become covered in shame, and not to come - to let the team down. He decides to hide to watch the game, and then leave.
Seeing that the girls win with a score of 3: 0, Gesha does not stand up and runs out onto the ice. The score is already 3: 2, but then the ball flies over the side. Anya rushes after him and, not noticing wormwood, falls into the ice. Trying to help her, Gesha falls through himself. The pilot rushes to the aid of the guys, jumps into the icy water and pulls them out.
Clementius brings Gesha to his hotel. Recovering, Gesha tells the brave pilot how he imagined himself to be his brother. Gesha, who came to visit his classmates with shame, admits deception.
The brave pilot urges the guys not to judge a friend for a dream and takes patronage over their class.
