White Nights - one of the most gentle stories of Fedor Dostoevsky. A sentimental and romantic story that deserves to be read by everyone. But if there is no time for this, then here is a brief summary of it in chapters.
First night
The main character is a guy posing as a Dreamer. At the very beginning of the story, he tells of his lonely existence in St. Petersburg. He is an official by profession, he is 26 years old, and the most pleasant hobby for him justifies his title as a Dreamer - he loves to dream.
One night, while walking, the hero meets the girl in tears, and, seeing how a bully sticks to her, the Dreamer decides to intercede and volunteers to lead the young lady home. From the conversation, he learns that her name is Nastya, and begins to suspect that she has some serious secret. Nastya and the Dreamer decide to meet the next evening, and before leaving she voices the request - the hero should not fall in love with her.
Second night
The promised meeting took place, and the heroes walk around, talking a lot. The dreamer talks about how scarce his life is, and Nastya, in turn, tells how she lives. It turns out that she has an old grandmother, rarely letting Nastya out for a walk. And last year, a girl fell in love with a guy to whom her grandmother rented a room. The young man promised to come exactly one year later to play a wedding. Now, two days in a row, Nastya comes to the bridge and waits for him, but the “tenant” still doesn’t come back and even sent no news.
Nastya begs the Dreamer to take a letter for her subject of sighing and to pass it through friends. At the end of the meeting, as for the first time, the heroes agree on the same meeting in the same place.
Third night
The meeting immediately begins with the sadness of Nastya, who never received an answer from her lover, and now decides to stop loving and forget him, since he had so simply rejected her.
She speaks words that inspire the Dreamer with hope: Nastya still loves the “tenant”, but if the Dreamer was nearby, she would have forgotten the deceiver much faster. At this moment, the guy and girl decide to be together. They make plans for the Dreamer moving closer to Nastya, renting a room from her grandmother. While walking, the couple meets a man with whom Nastya is still in love, and the girl leaves the Dreamer, leaving with the "tenant".
Morning
The morning comes, and the Dreamer, as always, meets him in complete solitude. A note from Nastya is delivered to him, and he reads how she asks her to be forgiven and dreams that the main character remains a friend of their new family.
The dreamer was not at all angry with the girl, quite the contrary. The hero is happy and grateful for the time they were together. And now let his boring and ordinary life resume, Nastya and the minutes with her will forever remain in his heart.
