(348 words) Autumn. A forest completely covered with gold and copper leaves. Composer Edward Grieg enjoys the local views. During one of the walks, he meets the forester's daughter, Dagni Pedersen, who was gathering fir cones. Edward meets the girl and, imbued with compassion for her fate (she grew up without a mother), promises to give her a present. To the child’s indignation, why not now, the composer replies: “You are still small and don’t understand much” - and helps her bring a basket with cones to her house. Dagny invites a man to visit, but he refuses and leaves, deciding to write music for the girl.
The empty apartment of Edward Grieg. The only remaining furniture is an old sofa for up to ten guests, and a piano. For more than a month the man wrote a gift promised by Dagni - a lot of wonderful themes and sounds that were amazing to the ears flew out from under the keys: he talked about the happiness and beauty of life, about all his thoughts and about the attractiveness of the girl.
In honor of graduation, his father sends eighteen-year-old Dagny to Christiania, to his sister Magda, the theater dressmaker, and her husband Niels, the theater hairdresser, who live in a room under the roof of the theater.
Usually the girl went to the theater she loved so much, after which, at night, she often cried and could not sleep. Aunt said that one should not take it seriously, and on the contrary, uncle claimed that music is a mirror of genius.
Once Magda, to unload and reassure the girl, persuaded Nils and Dagny to go to the concert. There, the girl first heard symphonic music, which made an indelible but strange impression on her, as if she were in a dream. Then something happened that turned her whole life upside down, something that struck to the core. The next piece of music was dedicated to her. And it was written by the same musician. It was the promised gift to her. And Dagny listened and heard the sounds of her native lands, saw mountains, the sea, a magnificent golden forest, where she met a fairytale wizard who gave her this beautiful melody. He showed her all the beauty of the world! He fulfilled his promise! And Dagny was crying. The music died down and the girl quickly left. Uninhabited streets flickered. Then a calm and calm sea. And standing in front of the scarlet dawn, a new day, Dagny realizes how much she loves life. And Niels, standing nearby and hearing the girl's laugh, calmed down for her, knowing that her life would not be in vain.
